Narrative Drift

A close reading of the moment when corporate language accelerates beyond the reality it claims to describe.

When a Company’s Story Moves Faster Than Its Business

Narrative Drift begins quietly. A company starts speaking about the scale of its opportunity, the strength of demand, the runway for future growth, the momentum it senses building beneath the surface. At first, this seems like ordinary optimism.

But slowly, almost imperceptibly, the story begins to separate from the business itself. The language accelerates while the underlying performance does not. The narrative acquires a pace the company has not yet earned.

This is the essence of Narrative Drift: a widening gap between the world management describes and the world it is actually operating in.
